Try Curling – Sat 12th Dec (FULL)

Inspired by the Winter Olympics or fancy an unusual day out? Book into one of our public Try Curling taster sessions!

This stand-alone taster session with qualified coaches teaches everything you need to know, and is the perfect commitment-free introduction to our winter sport. Whether you aspire to be Edinburgh and Team GB’s next Winter Olympic medalists, are looking for a new hobby, or just want to try something different, don’t let this opportunity slide away.

What do you need?

All participants must be ages 8 and upwards (no maximum age). You only need to bring a spare pair of spotlessly clean rubber-soled trainers for wearing on the ice. You do not need to buy new shoes just for Try Curling, simply give an existing pair of trainers a very good scrub clean. Your outdoor shoes worn to the rink cannot be worn on the ice because any moisture and dirt will damage our carefully-maintained playing surface.

What should you wear?

Wear warm socks, layers of loose clothing for warmth and freedom of movement, and possibly a hat and gloves. Remember to bring a spare pair of spotlessly clean rubber-soled trainers for wearing on the ice too.

How is the session formatted?

Meet our certified coaches and your fellow participants (a maximum of 8 per session) in our upstairs clubrooms at the advertised start time.  Your coaches will cover the basics, get your equipment sorted, and prepare everyone for going on the ice. Within 30 minutes you’ll be on the ice and sweeping like a pro before learning how to deliver our 20kg Olympic-standard stones. Curling is a very adaptable sport, so everyone can take part, regardless of ability. Once everyone is comfortable with the basics we’ll move onto enjoying some real gameplay, under coach supervision. After the 1h55 on-ice session you can return equipment and either head back upstairs for food/drink, to socialise, and watch more curling, or you are free to head home.

Finding Curl Edinburgh and the meeting point

Located at EH12 5XN (near Murrayfield Stadium), Curl Edinburgh is the big grey building beside the skating rink’s white and red Art Deco building. Our entrance is the single glass door at the far right side of the skating rink’s frontage.

From our single glass entrance, head through the grey corridor until you reach the double doors and staircase. Through the doors is the ice hall with changing room and toilets, but if you head upstairs and turn right at the top you’ll find our clubrooms with a bar/kitchen, accessible toilet, and viewing gallery to watch the curling, The meeting point for our Try Curling sessions is usually a table at the far end of the clubrooms, beside the trophy cabinet.

What are the next steps for more curling?

If you would like to do more curling, the next step would be our four-part Become A Curler beginner course, which will develop your skills and knowledge, making you a confident new curler. From there we have our New Stones beginner club, offering regular coaching sessions, friendly games with other local clubs, and the opportunity to pick up extra games as a Super Sub when a curler won’t be available for their scheduled fixture. Whenever you feel ready, you can also join any of the 60+ clubs based here for regular club games.
